Spirit Strike Out 15, Draw 15 Walks in Win

SURPRISE, ARIZ. – The OUAZ baseball team has been excellent at home so far this season, and added to its win total on Tuesday night. After giving up three runs in the first inning, the Spirit scored seven unanswered runs en route to a 7-3 victory over Hastings.

OUAZ matched its pitcher strikeouts with batter walks, as they had 15 each. The Spirit had a season-high in both categories, and it is the second time the team has struck out 15 opposing batters (vs. Bethesda on February 9).

The teams combined for just 10 hits, but the Spirit were on the basepaths often. Three different times OUAZ scored via the bases-loaded walk, and brought home four of its runs on big-time hits.

Seven different Spirit pitchers combined for the 15 punchouts, and recorded at least one strikeout in every inning. Three OUAZ arms had three strikeouts apiece, and the staff allowed just two hits after the opening frame.

The only extra-base hit of the game came courtesy of Logan Meyer, who doubled in the fifth inning to give OUAZ a 5-3 lead. Daniel Durazo tied the game with a single in the third, and the Spirit took the lead on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Gabriel DeJesus.

Meyer reached base each time he came to the plate (2-for-2, two walks), but he was not the only player to have a big night at the plate. Owen Prendergast had a pair of hits, and also came around to score on both of those hits.

The Spirit will continue GSAC play this weekend when they travel to take on Jessup. The first two games from Rocklin, Calif. will be this Friday, March 8.
