Spirit Split Doubleheader With Embry-Riddle

PRESCOTT, ARIZ. – After outscoring its opponent 11-0 in a doubleheader the day before, the OUAZ softball team travelled north to take on Cal Pac-leading Embry-Riddle on Wednesday night. After a tough defeat in the opening game, the Spirit bounced back for a strong win to split with its future conference opponent.

Embry-Riddle 8, OUAZ 0 (5 Innings)

The Spirit managed a pair of hits in the opening contest, as Brooklynne Esquibel and Mia Casadei each had a single. Casadei also turned her hit into a stolen base in the fifth inning.

OUAZ 4, Embry-Riddle 1

OUAZ turned the momentum immediately in the second game, as Esquibel hit a triple and scored on the same play thanks to an error by the second baseman. The Spirit would then score again in the second, as Serena Jackson singled home Elysa Moreno to double the lead.

Moreno would be the one to drive in the next OUAZ run, as her single brought across Emily Henard in the fourth. The Spirit would add one more insurance run in the seventh inning, with Moreno coming home to score again on a single, this time from Brianna Humphries.

Alyvia Hernandez turned in another excellent start, going six scoreless innings and eventually earning a complete-game win. Hernandez scattered four hits over the seven frames, and also struck out four batters.

The Spirit knocked out 10 hits to wrap up the night, with three of those being extra-base hits. Moreno had two hits in her busy night, and Savannah Sutton also had two doubles.

OUAZ will have over a week off before their next doubleheader, which sees the team jump back into conference play. The Spirit will host Arizona Christian on Saturday, April 6, with first pitch scheduled for Noon.
