TUCSON, ARIZ. – The OUAZ softball team played its first two contests of the Tucson Invitational Games, winning both in two different ways. The Spirit dominated a run-rule 10-0 decision over Puget Sound to start the day, and then needed just two runs in the fourth to post a 2-0 shutout victory over Dickinson State.
OUAZ 10, Puget Sound 0 (5 innings)
The Spirit broke open the game in the fifth inning, as they pushed across eight runs to set up a run-rule victory in the bottom of the inning. The top of the fifth started like this for OUAZ – triple, walk, two-RBI double, RBI single, double, two-RBI double, RBI triple, RBI double, and RBI single.
Those eight runs piled on top of the two that the Spirit scored in the third inning. Brooklynne Esquibel singled home a run, and then Serena Shine stole home to give OUAZ the 2-0 advantage.
Every player in the Spirit starting lineup had a hit, plus Esquibel had two knocks with three RBI. Elysa Moreno also had two hits, including a triple to lead off the explosive fifth inning.
While the offense was showing out, the pitching was excellent as well. Riley Shopp allowed just three hits and struck out eight batters in four innings, and Jazmine Ayala finished the game in the fifth with a scoreless frame to secure the win for OUAZ.
OUAZ 2, Dickinson State 0
Esquibel was an offensive spark again for the Spirit in the final game of the day, as she tripled home Shine for a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Esquibel then came around to score two batters latter thanks to a single from Brianna Humphries.
That was the only offense the Spirit needed, as Alyvia Hernandez put together another fantastic outing. Hernandez allowed only two hits over seven innings, and did not face more than three batters in a frame until the fifth.
While Hernandez faced one batter over the minimum, Savannah Sutton was a perfect 3-for-3 on the final game of the day. In the first at bat, Sutton ripped a double down the left field line, and then added two singles in the fourth and sixth innings.
OUAZ will play two more games on Saturday in the Tucson Invitational Games. The opening game at Lincoln Park will be against Tabor, with first pitch set for Noon.
