SURPRISE, ARIZ. – The first matchup between Vanguard and OUAZ produced a triple-overtime thriller that could be the Game of the Year in the GSAC. The second tilt between the two teams, with playoff positioning on the line, was just as good, and was another win for the Spirit.
The Spirit trailed by as much as five early in the second half, but used a 19-2 run to take the lead, and ultimately the win, for good. The team made nearly 52% of its shots over the final 20 minutes, and allowed the only two points during its largest run of the contest on free throws.
OUAZ had five players finish in double-digits scoring and out rebounded Vanguard 40-28 en route to a 93-86 victory on Thursday night. The Spirit were active on defense, recording nine steals and forcing 15 turnovers.
Elijah Simmons scorched the net all night long, making 10 of 14 shots and all of his free throws for 27 points. Simmons also cashed in on three of his five attempts from behind the arc, and had a couple of signature dunks during the evening.
Lachlan Viney had a locked in shooting night as well, going nine of 12 from the field for 19 points.
Jayce Catchings was a handful inside getting to the line 11 times, and finishing with 11 points to go along with nine rebounds.
The Spirit will wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they host Hope International. OUAZ does have a chance to earn a first-round bye in the GSAC Tournament with a win and some help around the league during the day. Tipoff against the Royals from Faith Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m.
