PLAINVIEW, Texas – No. 25 OUAZ football totaled 600 yards of offense in securing a 42-28 win over Wayland Baptist on Saturday evening at Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium.
OUAZ (3-1, 3-1 SAC) raced out to a 28-7 halftime advantage only to see Wayland Baptist (2-3, 2-2 SAC) trim that lead to 28-21 late in the third quarter. The Spirit responded with touchdowns on their first two drives of the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Jaylen Magee opened the scoring with a 50-yard rushing touchdown midway through the first quarter. He then capped OUAZ's second scoring drive with a 2-yard receiving touchdown from
Luke Giron. Magee ended the night with 113 rushing yards on 12 carries and 58 yards on three receptions.
Giron would record three touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown. His last two touchdown passes went for 22 yards to
James Duronslet in the second quarter and 70 yards to
Da'Vicious Wilson in the fourth quarter. Giron finished with 355 padding yards and added 25 yards rushing.
Wilson had 123 receiving yards on two catches, with
Domonhic Jennings adding seven grabs for 77 yards.
The Spirit's defense took control once Wayland had the game back within one score. The next two possessions saw the Pioneers gain just 17 yards and turn it over on downs and then punt. Wayland added a final touchdown with 7:02 to play, but the OUAZ Offense held the ball the rest of the game.
Tyler Faber and
Michael Young each had interceptions for the Spirit.
Arvell Ferguson added one sack.
Kier Gibson led the team with 10 tackles (seven solo) while Corey Floyd and 2.0 tackles-for-loss and
Tyler Ivy added 1.5.
OUAZ returns to action on Saturday, October 12, with a home game against Simpson. Kickoff has been adjusted and is now set for 5 p.m.
