The OUAZ men's soccer team is back on the winning ways after defeating Benedictine University Mesa 2-1 on Monday, September 11th at Spirit Field.
Â
Benedictine University Mesa struck early with Isaac Barreno finding the net in the first minute of the game, marking his third goal of the season.
OUAZ wasn't far behind, with
Peyton Montiel-Villegas netting his third goal of the season in the 26th minute, courtesy of an assist from
Ingram Kusaloka. Kusaloka dribbled the ball into the box on the left side, he spotted Montiel-Villegas on the right side of the box and crossed it over. Montiel-Villegas saw on opening on the right side of the net and unleashed a laser before the keeper could get into position to stop it.
The tables turned in the 42nd minute when OUAZ benefited from an own goal by Benedictine University Mesa, leading to a tie-breaking moment. The keeper had stopped a shot from Kusaloka who was vying for his third goal of the season. With a mass of humanity (aka 20 of the 22 players on the pitch), the keeper attempted to clear the ball, but instead it hit a Red Hawk defender and went into the left side of the goal for a 2-1 OUAZ lead.
Shots were fired from both sides, with Benedictine University Mesa registering 10 attempts and OUAZ responding with 13. Goalkeepers on both teams were put to the test, with Benedictine University Mesa's keeper making four saves and OUAZ's keeper making three.
In the battle of corner kicks, OUAZ had the upper hand, tallying five to Benedictine University Mesa's two.
The team will go out on the road for the next four matches. First is a road trip to the Panhandle State to take on Oklahoma City University and then Southwestern Christian University starting in ten days. Then the final weekend of September is the beginning of Golden State Athletic Conference play with Menlo and Jessup being the first two matches. On October 5, the Spirit will return to the friendly confines of Spirit Field to take on Arizona Christian. Get your tickets now as tickets are going quickly for the Valley Rivalry. You can get your tickets on the Hometown Tickets App or by
