Game Recap: Softball |

Spirit Drop Three Out of Four on the Weekend

Surprise, Arizona - OUAZ softball (17-14) played two doubleheaders this weekend against their California conference opponents, Hope International and Vanguard.

OUAZ dropped both of their matchups Friday against Hope, 2-0 in the first game followed up by a score of 8-6 in the following contest. They would go on to split their two games against Vanguard on Saturday, taking game one 8-5 and falling 13-0 the next game.

GAME ONE

With just seven total hits and two runs between both teams, the first game of the weekend was a classic pitchers duel. Ally McCutcheon went the distance, striking out right and allowing just two earned. Despite the fantastic outing, she earned the loss.

GAME TWO

The Spirit trailed 6-1 early on in the second inning, but managed to come storming back thanks to five-run fourth inning. Neither team scored until extra innings, when the Royals broke the tie with a two-run homer in the eighth which would turn out to be the game-winning hit.

Karlene Chavarria and Brooklynne Esquibel each logged multi-hit games with two hits and an RBI a piece. Mashayla Beltran had the game-tying two-RBI single in the fourth inning, but those would be the finals runs scored on the evening for OUAZ.

GAME THREE

Jazmine Ayala took the circle in game one on Saturday against Vanguard and earned the win. She allowed just one run on three hits in three innings of work. Ally McCutcheon and Sadie Levandowski throw the remaining four innings and allowed 3 earned runs between the two of them.

The Spirit standout in this game was Savannah Sutton. She launched a solo shot in the third inning for her teams first run of the game. She added two more hits in the game to go perfect at the plate.

Mashayla Beltran gave OUAZ the lead in the in the fifth, thanks to a two-RBI double putting them up 5-4. Beltran also finished the game with two hits and runs.

GAME FOUR

Brianna Williams for the Vanguard Lions tossed a five inning no-hitter while striking out nine Spirit batters. The final was 13-0.
