OUAZ Spirit Splits Third Consecutive Doubleheader

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ Spirit (3-3) took on their first ranked opponent of the season, No. 7 Oregon Tech (1-1), finishing in their third straight split. Game one was a OUAZ led rally, with the Spirit finishing 3-1, earning their first ranked win of 2023. Despite the game one win Lady Owls claimed the second of the night, 11-2. 

GAME 1: OUAZ 3, Oregon Tech 1
The first two innings were quiet, with the Spirit not earning a single hit and both innings having a three up, three down result. 

Off the first pitch sent her way int he 3rd, freshman Sophie Jackson hit a home run to center field, the first of her career, to put the Spirit on the board. OUAZ was unable to capitalize on this momentum, scoring that single run alone to eventually end the inning.

With runners on second and third, Charlene De Anda, who went 2-for-1, hit a two-run RBI single to increase the lead to 3-0 in the 5th inning. Oregon Tech was able to score a single run off a walk but were unable to comeback against the Spirit. 

Pitcher Alexandra McCutcheon earned her third win of 2023 with a season high of five strikeouts and a season low one one earned run. With just over 6 innings on the mound, McCutcheon saw 25 at bats, only allowing six hits. 

Sophomore Sadie Levandowski walked away with the save on the day. Entering the game with one out and bases loaded, Levandowski finished the game in five pitches.

GAME 2: OUAZ 2, Oregon Tech 11
In a second game that was dominated by the Lady Owls, the Spirit was able to get six hits in 26 at bats (.231), striking out a season high of 11 times. 

Mashayla Beltran, who went 3-for-3 in game two, was the Spirit's lone play maker, scoring a two-run RBI double in the first, tying the score 2-2. Despite the loss Beltran saw the most hits of her season and the second most RBIs. 

The Lady Owls were able to score six more runs, with the Spirit not able to come away with any runs before the end of the game, resulting in the 11-2 loss. 

Three pitchers, Sadie Levandowski, Ayala Jazmine and Haylee Sanchez saw time on the mound with Levandowski taking the loss. Between the three they saw 11 hits and only a single strike out. 

UP NEXT
The OUAZ Spirit Softball team will be back in Surprise tomorrow, Feb. 3 for the first of two double headers against Embry-Riddle. The first match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. MT with the second following shortly after at 4:00 p.m. MT.
