Saint Paul, Minn. - The OUAZ women's water polo team suffered a pair of losses at the open day of the Macalester Invite. The Spirit lost their first game 16-9 to McKendree and the second 9-8 to Augustana. McKendree took a 4-1 lead at the end of the opening period and never allowed the Spirit to get closer than four. OUAZ was led by Kendall Patrick who scored three goals and Rachel Hughes who recorded two. The loss snapped the Spirit's four-game win streak.
The Spirit loss against Augustana later in the day went back and forth and wasn't decided until the final minutes. With OUAZ leading 6-5 heading into the final period, Augustana collected a pair of goals to take a 7-6 lead with 5:09 remaining before OUAZ's Rachel Hughes tied the game (7-7) less than a minute later. The Spirit were outscored 2-1 in the final two minutes, with their final goal coming with :39 on the clock.
Jasmine Miller and Annie Ackert each scored a pair of goals in the second game, while Patrick added one more goal in the third to make it four on the day and the Hughes goal in the final period increased her total for the day to three.
OUAZ will play two more games on Sunday.
