McCutcheon's Perfect Game Highlights Spirit Sweep

Riverside, Calif. – The OUAZ Spirit recorded their second sweep of the season by taking a pair of games on the road against La Sierra (1-5) on Thursday in Riverside. In an early morning win, the Spirit collected a five-inning run-rule 8-0 victory over the Golden Eagles. La Sierra made it tougher in game two but the Spirit were able to hold onto an early lead and pull out a 5-4 win in extra innings. OUAZ, 6-5 overall, is currently riding a three-game win streak. 

GAME 1: Spirit 8, La Sierra 0

Graduate student Alexandra McCutcheon had a record day on the mound, earning the win on a five-inning perfect game, the first of her career and the first in program history. Facing the minimum 15 batters, she logged three strikeouts in collecting her third victory of the year. 

After a scoreless first inning, the Spirit exploded for seven runs over the next two innings. The final run of the contest came in the fifth. Elysa Moreno, who recorded four RBI's, broke open the scoring streak in the 2nd, with an RBI single. Moreno went on to hit in three more runs between the 3rd and 5th innings, including the game-winner. 

The Spirit's remaining four runs scored thanks to a 2-RBI double from Charlene De Anda, an RBI triple from Brooklynne Esquibel and an RBI from Angelina Mercado, solidifying the Spirit's first shutout of the season.

GAME 2: Spirit 5, La Sierra 4

It took extra innings but the Spirit beat La Sierra 5-4 in the second game of the day. Down 4-0 after three and a half innings, the Golden Eagles rallied back to tie the game in their half of the  seventh. OUAZ scored in the top of the 8th and then held off another rally for the win. This was the first extra inning contest of the year for OUAZ which improves to 7-5 on the year and has won four straight. 

Charlene De Anda was 2-for-4 in the game with one run and two RBIs, including hitting in the winning run off an RBI single in the top of the 8th. Junior infielder Brooklyn Esquibel was 2-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored.

Lefty pitcher Sadie Levandowski picked up her fourth win of the season, throwing the last two innings and securing the win. Alexandra McCutcheon went 3.2 innings in the start and Jazmine Ayala added 2.1 innings in relief before Lewandowski took the circle in the sixth.
