Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Best start in school history continues

On Tuesday night, the OUAZ women's basketball team continued its best start in program history with a 79-70 come-from-behind victory over Park University-Gilbert. The win breaks a three-game losing streak to Park and represents the longest winning streak (8) in school history to start the season.

Early on, the Spirit and Park-Gilbert matched each other until the Buccaneers held a slim 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. Controlling most of the second quarter, the Bucs used a 12-4 run to close out the first half and hold a 35-30 lead at the break.

After trading points in the first 44 seconds of the second half, OUAZ went on a 13-3 run to build a 45-40 lead. Park would tie the game up but never regain the lead the rest of the way.  Marlee Johnson started the game pretty cold, but due to her Elite training sessions, she turned it around and shot 33-percent on the evening.

The Spirit will continue their five-game road trip on Tuesday, Dec. 5, when they travel to Chandler to take on Justice College at 5:30 pm.

Notes:
  • The Spirit and Buccaneers have faced each other six times, with each team having three wins.
  • OUAZ (name position) Angel Addleman was named the GSAC women's basketball player of the week.  This is the first time since Natasa Radovic won the award in January of 2021.
  • The win puts this Spirit team in rare air as only two teams in school history have more wins.  The 2019-20 season tops the list with 12, and the 2018-19 team has 10.
  • No team in school history has averaged over 67 points per game.  This year, the team is averaging 79.2 points per game.
