Game Recap: Football |

Spirit are Champs for the third year in a row

Await the NAIA Selection show on Sunday to find out about playoffs

For the second time in the last month, the OUAZ football team scored the most points in college football, regardless of level.  Also, with the win, the Spirit are tri-champs with Louisiana Christian and Texas Wesleyan of the Sooner Athletic Conference.  It is the third consecutive league title for the Spirit.

However, the superlatives do not stop there.
  • Luke Giron threw for a season-high 401 yards.
  • The first time in school history that the Spirit had two rushers for over 100 yards and two receivers for over 100 yards.
  • A career-high for Jeremiah Wright with 134 yards on six catches and a touchdown.
  • A season-high for David Elder, who caught four passes for 109 yards, including a great 72-yard catch and run in the third quarter.
  • Jh'Dan Lester had a career night with 15 carries and 110 yards with a pair of touchdowns.
  • Stephen Bradford rushed for 143 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns. The yard mark and touchdowns are both season highs.

Other notes from the game:
  • Only three of the 15 drives by the Spirit did not end in a touchdown.
  • Of the 11 touchdown drives, five were under two minutes.
  • 16 of the 80 plays (20 percent) went for more than 15 yards for the Spirit offense.
  • For the seventh time in nine games, the Spirit scored more than 30 points.
    • Six times, the team has scored over 50 points.
  • Landon Reeves kicked a field goal in the sixth consecutive game.
  • In the first quarter, the Spirit was credited with a safety.  It is the first time since Sept. 10, 2022, against SAGU that the Spirit has scored a safety and only the fifth time in school history.
  • It is the fifth straight victory over Panhandle State and the largest margin of victory in the series.

OUAZ now awaits to hear if they will qualify for the NAIA playoffs.  Due to tiebreakers, Louisiana Christian will be the automatic qualifier from the Sooner Athletic Conference.  The NAIA Selection show will be at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12.  Stay tuned to OUAZSpirit.com to find out where the Spirit is heading for the playoffs.
