In a thrilling Sooner Athletic Conference showdown between OUAZ and Louisiana Christian University (LCU) that left the capacity crowd on the edge of their seats until the very last moment, it was OUAZ moving their winning streak to six as they hung on for a 27-24 victory over the previously undefeated Wildcats.
OUAZ's (6-1, 5-1 SAC) quarterback, Luke Giron, proved to be a pivotal figure, completing 18 of 26 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Giron also led the Spirit in rushing with 53 yards on seven carries.
LCU (7-1, 5-1 SAC) was led by quarterback, Sal Palermo III, who had a commendable performance, going 22-for-33 with 174 passing yards and two touchdowns.
OUAZ's Stephen Bradford churned out 44 yards on 11 carries, while Jordan Wilmore, the reigning SAC Offensive Player of the Week, was held to 24 yards on 17 carries.
The Spirit receiving corps was led by Jeremiah Wright who caught three passes for 94 yards and a crucial touchdown. Roman Sahagun also made an impact with four catches for 59 yards and a touchdown.
With under a minute left in the game LCU faced fourth and six from their own 43. Palermo completed a short pass to Marc Denison for five plus yards. The referees marked the ball and and called for a measurement. The ball ended up inches shy of a first down for an OUAZ defensive stop and the subsequent win.
With the victory, OUAZ keeps their hopes for a SAC championship alive. They will need to win out and get a little help, potentially and ironically from LCU as they will face a currently undefeated SAC opponent, Texas Wesleyan on the last weekend of conference play.
Next up for the Spirit is a difficult road game at Langston University (Oklahoma) on October 28. Stay up with all the action at OUAZSpirit.com.
