Spirit Stay Perfect after Defeating Louisiana Christian 45-13

SURPRISE, Ariz. – After being held scoreless in the first quarter for the third straight week, the seventh-ranked OUAZ football team scored 38 consecutive points to defeat Louisiana Christian 45-13 on Saturday night at Spirit Field.

OUAZ (4-0, 4-0 Sooner) took a while to get anything going on offense as the Spirit punted on each of its first four possessions. It was a 14-play, 77-yard drive that ended with Donovahn Jones scoring on a five-yard pass from Isaiah Randalle, giving the Spirit a 7-6 lead with 13:10 to play in the second quarter.

Landon Reeves connected on a 36-yard field goal on the next Spirit possession, but that would be all the scoring in the first half. After the intermission, things quickly turned in the third quarter with touchdowns on the team's first three possessions.

Roman Sahagun set up the first score of the third with a 52-yard punt return to the Louisiana Christian (1-3, 1-2 Sooner) 6-yard line. Randalle hit Jones on the next play for a 17-6 lead. Ryan Payne ended the next two Wildcat possessions with an interception and a fumble recovery. The Spirit offense turned those into a Marcelous Chester-Riley touchdown run and a Randalle to Sahagun touchdown pass.

Devone Humphrey scored on a 28-yard pass from Randalle late in the third quarter to open a 38-6 OUAZ lead. LCU snapped a run of 11 consecutive drives ending without points with a touchdown drive early in the fourth quarter.

After forcing a punt on the next OUAZ possession, the kick bounced into the return man and was recovered by the Spirit at the 5-yard line. Randalle connected with Ewens for his fifth TD pass of the day on the next snap to provide the game's final tally.

Randalle finished 18 of 38 for 272 yards and the ninth 5-plus touchdown outing in program history. Humphrey led the team with five catches for 88 yards, with Jones gaining 65 yards on four receptions.

LCU finished with a 383-325 edge in total yards, but the Spirit forced five turnovers and started seven drives on the Wildcat side of the field. OUAZ started five consecutive drives in LCU territory at one point, and only twice in 18 possessions began inside their own 25-yard line. Even with the yardage advantage, LCU only had one trip inside the red zone.

The Spirit defense recorded six sacks and 12 tackles-for-loss. David Sow had a pair of sacks and a forced fumble. Scott Bonham Jr. led the team with nine tackles, and Brandon Tomerlin Jr. had eight tackles and one sack. Payne added one tackle, a pass breakup, and a blocked field goal to his interception and a fumble recovery. Travis Cutright II and Brajhon Crenshaw each had an interception.

Austin Bohn averaged 48.0 yards per punt and hit one for 70 yards for the third punt of his career to cover at least 70 yards.

Next up for the Spirit is the 13-mile trip to Glendale to face Arizona Christian on October 1 at 7 p.m.
