Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 10 Spirit Open Season with Win in Stockton’s Debut

SURPRISE, Ariz. – After waiting a few days longer to finally begin the new season, the 10th-ranked OUAZ men's soccer team secured a 3-0 win over Antelope Valley at Spirit Field on Saturday evening. The game was halted in the 71st minute due to lightning in the vicinity.

David Stockton earned his first career win as head coach with the result.

It took some time for OUAZ (1-0) to find its rhythm against an Antelope Valley (0-1) squad that came in prepared to sit back and make it challenging for the Spirit to score. The breakthrough came in the 37th minute when Mark Lydford played a cross from the left sideline into the area when Tinashe Simbo was alone with an open net to open the scoring.

OUAZ turned up the pressure coming out of the halftime break and generated seven shots and eight corner kicks, leading to a second goal from Simbo in the 67th minute. After Misael Moreno started a run, he played Simbo for a left-footed shot from the top of the box over the keeper's reach and a 2-0 lead.

Moreno then capped the scoring 73 seconds later when he ran onto a bouncing ball and buried a shot from 25-yards out for his first goal of the season.
When the game was called, OUAZ held a 15-4 advantage in shot attempts, with nine on frame. The Spirit attempted nine shots and took nine of their 12 corners in the second half.

Tom Cohen led all players with eight shots (five on goal). Simbo was the only other player with more than one shot.

Adam Salama picked up his first win of the season in goal by making one save.

OUAZ remains home, where they will host Wayland Baptist on Thursday at 8 p.m.
