Women’s Golf Places 22nd at NAIA National Championship

OKLAHOMA CITY – The OUAZ women's golf team saw its season come to an end on Thursday with a 22nd-place finish at the 2022 NAIA Women's Golf National Championship. OUAZ finished its 36 holes on the Lincoln Park West Golf Course with 625 (+49) strokes.

Battling some challenging weather conditions that played havoc on the Spirit's schedule, OUAZ couldn't begin play until late on Wednesday afternoon. They didn't complete the first round until early Thursday morning, where they sat tied for 22nd by shooting 315 (+27).

With the format adjusted to a shotgun format, the team immediately went into the second round, where they shot 310 (+22), playing as many as 25 holes on less than 10 hours of rest.

Mikayla Sgrillo would lead the way for the Spirit with a two-round total of 154 (+10). That placed her tied for 67th after the round on Thursday. Sgrillo shot 75 (+3) in the first round before a 79 (+7) in the second. Her week included three birdies and 23 pars.

After shooting 77 (+5) and 79 (+7), Olivia Serpa finished tied for 83rd at 156 (+12). She was even-par through 10 holes when play was suspended in the first round before opening with five bogeys in her eight holes to end the round Thursday morning. In the end, Serpa had a pair of birdies and 20 pars over the two days.

Mollie Owen finished tied for 98th with a 36-hole total of 158 (+14). Owen began the tournament with six straight bogeys before playing her final 30 holes at 8-over with three birdies. Her 76 (+4) in the second round was tied for the low round of the event by a Spirit player.

Danielle Talley had the other 76 (+4) in the second round to end her week at 159 (+15). That left Talley tied for 105th overall. She responded from a tough start of 83 (+11) in the first round and finished the week with three birdies.

Emma Johnson rounded out the lineup for the Spirit in a tie for 119th after shooting 161 (+17). Johnson picked up two birdies during her second round 80 (+8).

By sitting in 22nd after the second round, OUAZ missed the cut, which takes the top 17.

British Columbia leads the Championship entering Friday's final round with a score of 572 (-4). They are 10 shots clear of Oklahoma City.

MinJi Kang from Truett McConnell holds the individual lead at 135 (-9).
