Softball Game Notes -- Week 14

The OUAZ softball team looks to defend its GSAC Tournament title when they open the 2022 GSAC Softball Tournament on Tuesday against Vanguard. The first pitch between the Spirit and Lions is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the OC Great Park in Irvine, Calif.

The winner of the game advances to Game No. 5 on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. The loser will play in Game No. 4 on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in an elimination game. The championship game is on Thursday at 1 p.m., with the if-necessary game slated for 4 p.m.

OUAZ is the No. 3 seed in the tournament, and they enter with a 32-18 overall record and having won six of the last nine games they played. The Spirit went 13-11 in GSAC play to tie for third, and they won the tiebreak with Hope International for the better seed in the tournament. OUAZ went 4-4 at a neutral site during the regular season, and they are 2-3 all-time in the postseason.

The Spirit won the modified GSAC Tournament in 2021, defeating Hope International 2-1 in a best-of-three series between the two division winners.

Vanguard holds a 9-2 edge in the all-time series with the Spirit, including a 3-1 record this season. OUAZ won at Vanguard 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on March 19 before the Lions earned a split with a 10-0 win in game two. They then defeated the Spirit 3-0 and 10-2 in the two games played in Surprise on April 1.

OUAZ enters the tournament hitting .290 with a .767 OPS while averaging 7.36 hits per game. They are fourth in the GSAC with a .361 on-base percentage and .406 slugging percentage. OUAZ has 14 games with 10-plus hits while scoring in double digits seven times.

The Spirit has gone 21-3 this season when they score at least five runs in a game. They are 18-1 when leading after three innings and 22-0 after six. In games decided by one run, OUAZ is 11-5 and has won three straight.

There have been 17 innings during the year that the Spirit scored at least four runs, and twice they scored 12 runs in a single inning. They have allowed the opposition to score four-plus runs in an inning 11 times to counter that.

Katelyn Chambers leads the Spirit with 42 hits and a .318 batting average. She has stolen 12 bases and delivered 12 sacrifice hits while scoring 25 runs. Chambers is tops on the team with six multi-RBI games for 16 total RBIs, and she has 11 games with multiple hits. 

Breanna Gonzalez ended the regular season on a 10-game hitting streak to raise her average to .318 with 41 hits. During the streak, she has gone 14 for 34 (.412) to raise her season average by 34 points. Her year includes eight multi-hit games with three games with three hits. Gonzalez is second on the team with 24 RBIs with four triples.

Andraya Rhinehart is batting .308 with a .816 OPS. She has tallied multiple hits in a game nine times while picking up nine doubles with a homer and 18 RBIs. Rhinehart has stolen 14 bases and scored 23 runs.

Laurynn De Anda is the team leader in runs (30), doubles (13), and RBIs (26) while hitting four home runs. Her 19 extra-base hits are seventh-most in the GSAC. De Anda has 11 games with multiple hits and four with multiple RBIs.

Samantha Miller holds a .300 batting average with 36 hits and 10 multi-hit games. 

Mashayla Beltran is batting .289 with 19 RBIs. 

Rachel Stockseth has a .281/.349/.375 slash line with 19 RBIs and 21 runs scored. 

Charlene De Anda has driven in 19 runs with 23 hits and six doubles.

OUAZ is fourth in the GSAC with its 2.65 ERA while posting a 1.35 WHIP. They are holding the opposition to a .261 batting average while allowing 6.99 hits per seven innings. The staff is fourth in the GSAC by averaging 5.05 strikeouts per seven innings.

Alexandra McCutcheon is third in the conference with 17 wins, and 155.1 innings pitched. She maintains a 2.43 ERA and .249 opponents batting average with three shutouts. Her 136 strikeouts are third in the GSAC and an OUAZ single-season record.

Phoebe Popplewell has a 2.58 ERA, where she ninth seventh in the GSAC. Popplewell is 11-7 overall after going 7-3 in her last 10 decisions. She averages 4.25 strikeouts per seven innings with a .230 opponent average.

Cori Turner has gone 4-1 with a 3.70 ERA in 47.1 innings.
