Historic Season Ends at National Championship

DES MOINES, Iowa – A season unlike any that came before it for the OUAZ men's volleyball team came to an end on Thursday with a 3-2 loss to Park in pool play at the NAIA Men's Volleyball National Championship.

In a memorable match that went back-and-forth and saw both teams make runs, OUAZ came up a little short in a 17-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23, 12-15 final.

Neither team could generate an efficient offensive attack for much of the day, with both finishing with an attack percentage below .200. Park (21-6) finished with a 55-50 advantage in kills, and the Pirates used 13 kills and a .500 attack percentage in the fifth set to provide the difference.

OUAZ finished the match hitting .140, but only twice had 10-plus kills in a set. Their best offensive effort came in the fourth set, where the Spirit totaled 14 kills on .310 hitting.

Jordan Moses anchored the Spirit attack with 18 kills while hitting .438. Emery Outin added 10 kills, and Colin Donisthorpe finished with seven.

The Spirit defense kept them in the match as they tied the program record with 18.5 blocks. They added 34 digs to help hold Park to a .167 attack percentage with 33 hitting errors.

Donisthorpe tied his season-high with 11 blocks while Moses and Brenden Hardt added seven apiece. Quaid King led the Spirit with 12 digs, and Outin had a team-best two service aces.

The loss ends a historic season for the Spirit in which their 25-3 record set the program record for wins in a season and the highest winning percentage. They also won both the GSAC regular season and tournament championships, the NCCAA National Championship, and advanced to the NAIA National Championship for the first time in program history.
