Softball Game Notes -- Week 7

Off to its best start in program history, the OUAZ softball team will begin GSAC play this week with a pair of home doubleheaders. The Spirit will host Arizona Christian on Wednesday and then welcome San Diego Christian on Friday. Both days will begin at 2 p.m. at Willow Canyon High School.

OUAZ opens conference action at 14-6 overall after completing a 4-2 week at the Tucson Invitational. The defending GSAC champions were picked to finish fourth by the coaches in the preseason. OUAZ is 6-2 at home this season.

The Spirit currently leads the GSAC with a .345 batting average while ranking second in both on-base percentage (.420) and slugging percentage (.477). OUAZ is tops on the conference by scoring 6.80 runs per game while averaging 9.05 hits. They have scored in double figures six times and had 10-plus hits in a game nine times.

Katelyn Chambers is batting .426 to lead the Spirit and rank seventh in the GSAC. She has 23 hits and 10 walks for a 1.053 OPS with 15 runs and nine RBIs. Chambers is riding a four-game hitting streak during which she has gone 7 for 11 at the plate.

Samantha Miller leads the team with 25 hits, and she carries a .362/.493/.405 slash line. Miller has seven multi-hit games –including four games with three hits – and she has 14 runs scored and 11 RBIs.

Mashayla Beltran is also on a four-game hitting streak (7 of 13) to raise her season batting average to .388. Charlene De Anda and Laurynn De Anda are tied for the team lead with 15 RBIs. Heliana Bueno is the team leader with seven doubles. Andraya Rhinehart is batting .517 and Angelina Mercado had 14 RBIs.

OUAZ maintains a 2.23 ERA and 1.33 WHIP through 20 games. They are holding the opposition to a .267 batting average while allowing 7.24 hits per seven innings. The staff is third in the GSAC by averaging 6.56 strikeouts per seven innings.

Alexandra McCutcheon leads the Spirit with an 8-3 record and 1.54 ERA. McCutcheon is second in the GSAC with 76 strikeouts and third at 8.44 strikeouts per seven. She is third in wins, fourth in innings, and ERA. McCutcheon is one win shy of tying the program record for wins in a season.

Phoebe Popplewell is 3-2 with two saves and a 2.86 ERA in 36.2 innings. She has recorded 28 strikeouts with a .259 opponents batting average. Cori Turner has gone 3-1 with a 3.19 ERA in 26.1 innings.
