Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Catchings Leads Spirit to Fourth Straight Win

COSTA MESA, Calif. – Playing at The Pit for the final time before it is demolished this summer, the OUAZ men's basketball team recorded an 84-76 win over Vanguard for a first-ever win against the Lions and a fourth straight win overall.

It took a career-high 27 points from Jayce Catchings and another solid first half for OUAZ (17-8, 8-7 GSAC) as they took a 47-33 lead into the break to get the win. The Spirit closed the period with an 11-3 run to turn a six-point lead into the 14-point halftime advantage.

The Spirit lead would reach its largest at 53-35 with 16:47 to play before Vanguard (15-10, 7-7) began to chip away. The Lions eventually got within 76-72 with 32 seconds left, but the Spirit would convert all six attempts at the foul line to seal the victory.

Catchings scored 19 points in the first half – including 14 over the final 7:21 – on his way to the third 20-point outing of the season and first since November 15. He made 10 of 16 shots with five threes and a team-high seven rebounds and two steals in 25 minutes off the bench.

OUAZ shot 50.8 percent overall and went 9 of 26 from beyond the arc. They held a 38-24 advantage in the paint while scoring 22 points from 16 Vanguard turnovers. The Spirit committed just 11 turnovers to help balance the 30-26 rebounding deficit.

Kam Malbrough and Josiah De'laCerda added 14 points apiece, with Devin Collins and Keshawn Bruner finishing with 12 points.

Vanguard shot 51.9 percent and scored 11 points from seven offensive rebounds. Garrett White led the Lions with 19 points.

The Spirit returns home next week to play the final two homes games of the season. That begins on Thursday when they welcome Menlo to Faith Arena.
