Softball Game Notes -- Week 2

STORYLINES
This weekend, the OUAZ softball team is back in action with a pair of doubleheaders at Willow Canyon High School. The Spirit will begin the weekend by hosting Park Gilbert on Friday, with game one starting at 2 p.m. They will then face Saint Katherine on Saturday at noon.

OUAZ will bring a 1-1 record into the weekend after splitting a doubleheader with No. 2 College of Idaho last Friday. The Spirit defeated the Yotes 7-2 in the season opener before falling in game two, 7-5.

The Spirit showed some potential at the plate in the opening series with 17 hits and a .333 batting average in the two games. They tallied four doubles and two home runs to end the day with a .962 OPS.

Nine different players recorded a hit in the doubleheader, and six recorded multiple knocks. There were also five different players that drove in multiple runs. The team also drew eight walks and was 3 of 4 stealing bases.

Breanna Gonzalez went 3 for 6 with a homer and two RBI in the season's first two games. Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in game one that tied the game and sparked the Spirit offense.

Samantha Miller finished the two games 3 for 8 with a pair of RBI. She posted all three hits in game two and finished a triple shy of the cycle after a home run in the third and a double in the first.

Heliana Bueno recorded a pair of hits – including a double – in five at-bats with a pair of runs driven in. Katelyn Chambers was also 2 for 5 with three walks.

OUAZ pitchers posted a 3.50 earned run average against the nation's No. 2 team while allowing the Yotes to hit .327. The trio in the circle had a 1.86 WHIP while posting 13 strikeouts and giving up just four extra-base hits.

Alexandra McCutcheon picked up the win in game one and finished the day with a 1.45 ERA and nine strikeouts. After allowing a pair of runs in the first inning of game one, McCutcheon threw 8.2 scoreless innings in her complete game and then in relief in game two.
