Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

OUAZ Escapes LPU with 69-63 Win

SAN DIMAS, Calif. – It wasn't their best second half of the season, but the OUAZ men's basketball team made enough plays to escape Mehl Court with a 69-63 win over Life Pacific to complete a season sweep of the Warriors.

Leading 37-30 at halftime, OUAZ (16-8, 7-7 GSAC) shot just 28.6 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes as Life Pacific (6-14, 3-10) continued to keep it close. The Warriors took a 53-52 lead with 9:51 remaining before a Kam Malbrough bucket and a three-point-play from Jayce Catchings put the Spirit back in front.

Keshawn Bruner broke a 57-57 tie with an and-one of his own at the 6:08 mark of the second half. That basket was the final made field goal by either team the rest of the night, and it sparked a 7-0 run by the Spirit that was enough separation to secure the win. OUAZ converted 10 of 13 at the foul line down the stretch to overcome the seven straight misses.

Bruner finished with a team-best 18 points – the most he has scored in a game since December 15 – by making 5 of 10 from the floor and 8 of 9 at the foul line. He made six of his seven free throw attempts in the final six-plus minutes of action.

Catchings added 16 points off the bench behind a 3 of 8 night from beyond the arc. Malbrough scored 10 points with four assists, while Kolten Hitt and Josiah De'laCerda had nine points apiece. Devin Collins grabbed 10 rebounds.

The second half shooting woes dropped the Spirit to 36.7 percent shooting in the game. They were able to survive the poor shooting and getting outrebounded 45-36 by committing a program-record low four turnovers.

Pedro Leal-Cruz led the Warriors with 18 points.

Now fifth in the GSAC standings, OUAZ can move into fourth with a win at Vanguard on Saturday at 3 p.m. (AZ).
