Spirit Earn First Win Behind Strong Fourth Quarter

TEMPE, Ariz. – Having played one of the toughest schedules in the country to start the season, the OUAZ women's water polo team used that experience to defeat Salem 16-15 on Friday afternoon for the team's first win of the season.

OUAZ (1-8) led 7-3 after the first quarter and seemed to be on its way to a relatively easy first win. However, Salem (0-6) had other plans and outscored the Spirit 12-5 to hold a 15-13 lead with 7:28 to play.

Jasmine Miller started the Spirit comeback with a goal at the 7:09 mark of the fourth quarter, and then Kylee Wesemann made it 15-14 with 5:56 on the clock. It appeared that was going to be as close as the Spirit would get until a goal from Jenna Rasmussen with 48 seconds to play tied the game at 15-15. OUAZ would complete the stunning rally when Kendall Patrick scored the eventual game-winner with eight seconds remaining.

OUAZ finished the game with a 34-24 edge in shot attempts, with Kylee Crofcheck taking a team-best nine for a game-high four goals. Kamille Graham and Wesemann added three goals apiece for the Spirit.

Kelly Rowan stopped six Salem shots in goal to earn the win.

On Saturday, the Spirit is back in the pool when they face Cal State East Bay at 12:30 p.m. at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
