Spirit Down Redhawks in Home Opener

SURPRISE, Ariz. – With four players in double figures, the OUAZ men's basketball team defeated Benedictine Mesa 78-70 on Wednesday night in the home opener at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (2-1) controlled the game inside the arc with 56 points in the paint to help them shoot 51.6 percent. They overcame 3 of 17 shooting from beyond the arc by making 64 percent of their 2-point attempts.

Keshawn Bruner led all players with 25 points on 9 of 12 shooting. His second 20-point effort in the first three games of the season included nine points during a 20-12 Spirit run after Benedictine Mesa (2-1) cut their deficit to six with 10:12 to play in the second half.

The Spirit held the Redhawks to 40.8 percent shooting and 5 of 17 from three, with only one of those makes coming after halftime. OUAZ forced 18 turnovers for 21 points with another 21 fast break points.

Josiah De'laCerda added a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds while leading the team with four assists. Kolten Hitt scored 13 points, and Alex Villi finished with 10.

Michael Kirkland scored 23 points with five makes from beyond the arc to lead the Redhawks.

OUAZ will go for consecutive home wins on Saturday when they host Texas Wesleyan at noon.
