OUAZ Advances to Semifinals with 2-0 Shutout

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Behind a pair of goals in the first half, the OUAZ men's soccer team defeated Westmont 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2022 GSAC Men's Soccer Tournament.

OUAZ (11-5-2) recorded its first-ever postseason win at home with the result after a pair of one-goal losses in the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

The Spirit took the 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Jamaine Turner dribbled through the Westmont (9-5-2) defense to create an open shot from deep in the penalty area. His 10th goal of the season proved to be the eventual game-winner.

Aleem Barclay would provide the insurance when he scored his first goal of the season in the 24th minute. He found himself alone at the left edge of the penalty area and out a shot off the far post that redirected back into the goal.

Westmont had an opportunity to pull one back in the 43rd minute, but the free kick from Erik Guerrero was right at Spirit keeper Adam Salama. Neither team had a dangerous scoring chance for the rest of the afternoon.

Each team totaled three shots on goal, with the Spirit taking six total shots and the Warriors eight. Both teams took four corner kicks.

Salama made three saves in recording his third shutout of the year.

With the win, and Vanguard defeating Menlo, the Spirit will face Arizona Christian on Thursday in Atherton, Calif. That semifinal game at Menlo College will begin at 3 p.m. AZT.
