Turner PK Puts OUAZ Through to Championship Game

ATHERTON, Calif. – Jamaine Turner converted a penalty kick in the 83rd minute to give the OUAZ men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Arizona Christian in the semifinals of the GSAC Men's Soccer Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

OUAZ (12-5-2) entered the game having dropped three straight to Arizona Christian (10-3-5), including a home loss in the conference tournament's quarterfinals last season.

Thursday's game was another tightly contested battle that seemed destined for overtime until the 83rd minute when Turner was tripped up as he split two defenders just inside the penalty area. The sophomore then stepped up and delivered a perfect strike low inside the left post for his 11th goal of the season.

The winner came on the last of the nine shots taken by the Spirit and was their fourth attempt on goal. The Firestorm had 10 shots with five on goal, including a chance in the 85th minute that was corralled by Adam Salama in goal for the Spirit.

Salama recorded his fourth shutout of the season and his second straight in the tournament.

OUAZ will now face Vanguard on Saturday at 2 p.m. AZT for the conference title.
