Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Turnovers Hinder OUAZ’s Upset Attempt

GLENDALE, Ariz. – In a rematch of the game that ended its season in March, the OUAZ men's basketball team flirted with an upset of No. 3 College of Idaho before the Yotes did enough down the stretch to secure an 83-72 win.

OUAZ (1-1) led most of the first half and were in front 26-16 with 5:48 to play in the half. College of Idaho (1-1) closed the half with a 16-4 run to take a 32-30 lead into halftime, and they never trailed again.

Every time the Spirit got within striking distance in the second half, the Yotes would counter with a run of their own to keep the advantage. They closed out the win by converting all 12 attempts from the foul line in the final minute.

After shooting just 40 percent in the first half, OUAZ turned things around after the break and ended the day at 43.9 percent with 28 points in the paint. Defensively, they held the Yotes to 45.2 percent shooting, but they turned it over 16 times, which resulted in 21 points for C of I.

Kolten Hitt led the Spirit with a career-high 20 points by shooting 8 of 13 from the field with three makes from beyond the arc. He was one of four OUAZ players with two assists.

Josiah De'laCerda added 15 points, with Alex Villi and Keshwn Bruner scoring 12 and 11, respectively. Devin Collins led the way with 12 rebounds.

College of Idaho got 17 points and four steals from Charles Elzie.

OUAZ will play at home for the first time this season on Wednesday when they host Benedictine Mesa in Faith Arena at 6 p.m.
