Spirit Open Season with Win Over Oklahoma City

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Entering a new season with high expectations, the OUAZ men's basketball team started in a positive fashion by securing a 90-83 win over Oklahoma City on Friday afternoon during the first day of the ACU Fultz Classic.

OUAZ (1-0) didn't get off to the best start and trailed Oklahoma City (0-2) 25-15 just over eight minutes into the game. The Spirit turned things around with a 25-10 run – featuring 13 points from Keshawn Bruner – over the next nine minutes to help them take a 42-40 lead into halftime.

The teams traded the lead back-and-forth through the first eight minutes of the second half before OUAZ scored 13 straight points to open a 69-58 lead with 9:43 to play. OCU got within three at the 7L26 mark but never closer the rest of the game.

OUAZ shot 50.8 percent from the floor with a 42-16 advantage in the paint. They added 21 points from the 15 turnovers they forced and scored 18 points from 12 offensive rebounds. That helped them overcome their 20 turnovers.

Bruner scored 29 points on 9 of 14 shooting while converting 10 of 12 at the foul line. Josiah De'laCerda added a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds, hitting both of his attempts from beyond the arc. Alex Villi scored 15 points, and Kolten Hitt finished with 13.

Along with forcing those 15 turnovers, the Spirit held OCU to 39.4 percent shooting and had a 43-36 edge in rebounds. The Stars went 12 of 28 from three. Avery Jackson led OCU with 32 points.

It's a quick turnaround for the Spirit as they wrap up the ACU Fultz Classic on Saturday when they face No. 3 College of Idaho in a rematch of last season's NAIA National Championship Second Round game.
