Spirit Fall at Westmont after Late Shooting Woes

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The OUAZ men's basketball team had to settle for a split of its conference-opening road trip after falling at Westmont 84-75 on Saturday afternoon at Murchison Gymnasium.

OUAZ (4-2, 1-1 GSAC) overcame a nine-point deficit with 9:17 to play and led 73-72 with 2:22 on the clock when Alex Villi made a pair of free throws. Westmont (8-1, 2-0) then scored 12 of the game's final 14 points while holding the Spirit 0 for 6 the rest of the game.

The late shooting trouble dropped the Spirit to 41.2 percent for the game. They made just 3 of 19 from beyond the arc in the first game since making a program-record 17 threes on Thursday. OUAZ scored 46 points in the paint and got 20 points off the bench.

Josiah De'laCerda led four OUAZ players in double figures with 16 points after scoring 10 in the first half. Keshawn Bruner added 14 points, with McKay Bundy and Villi finishing with 12 apiece.

Westmont shot 50.0 percent while going 14 of 27 from three. The Warriors also had 21 points from 12 offensive rebounds and 20 points from 14 OUAZ turnovers.

Cade Roth led all players with 29 points after going 5 of 7 from deep.

OUAZ will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Embry-Riddle in Faith Arena at 6 p.m.
