Villi Leads Spirit to Overtime Road Win in GSAC Opener

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – On an exciting night at The MacArthur Center, the OUAZ men's basketball team took advantage of a record-setting performance from Alex Villi to defeat The Master's 103-94 in overtime to open GSAC play.

Villi shot 10 of 17 from beyond the arc to finish with a game-high 36 points. He scored 10 points in overtime, including threes on the team's first two offensive possessions. His 36 points are tied for sixth-most in program history, while he set the record for made and attempted triples in a game.

OUAZ (4-1, 1-0 GSAC) set the team record for 3-pointers made in a game by finishing 17 of 37 from deep. They entered the night with just 21 made triples in the season's first four games. The 103 points are the most by a Spirit team in a conference game, and it's the eighth 100-point effort in team history.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak against The Master's (4-2, 0-1), and it was the third time in the past four games the teams went to overtime.

Tied at 83-83 at the end of regulation, OUAZ outscored the Mustangs 20-11 in the extra period. Villi made a three from the top and then a step-back three from the corner on the first two Spirit possessions to spark a 17-5 run. They held the Mustangs to 2 of 6 in the bonus session.

Keshawn Bruner hit a three at the end of the first half that sent the Spirit into the locker room with a 42-31 advantage. TMU would chip away throughout the entire second half and used a 17-7 run to lead 81-78 with 1:17 remaining.

Down one in the final minute, Josiah De'laCerda blocked a shot at one end and then hit a three at the other to put the Spirit back in front 83-81 with 40 seconds left. De'laCerda then fouled out on the next trip, and Kaleb Lowry tied the game with a pair of free throws. The final possession of regulation saw a three from Jayce Catching come up short for the Spirit.

OUAZ shot 46.4 percent for the game with 25 points from 21 offensive rebounds. They also converted the 15 TMU turnovers into 25 points. The Mustangs shot 44.6 percent and went 13 of 29 from deep.

Catchings scored 15 points off the bench in his season debut for the Spirit. Devin Collins added 14 points and 13 rebounds, while De'laCerda had 13 points and three blocks. McKay Bundy came up with five rebounds, including three at the offensive end in overtime. Josh Rivers had six assists.

Kamrin Oriol led the Mustangs with 24 points on 6 of 10 from three. Kaleb Lowery and Christian Sweazie had 20 points apiece.

OUAZ will be back in action on Saturday when they face Westmont at 3 p.m. AZT in Santa Barbara.
