Second Half Rally, PK Save Earn Spirit Three Points at Jessup

ROCKLIN, Calif. – As the race to the top of the GSAC table moves closer to a conclusion, the OUAZ men's soccer team picked up a critical three points with a 3-2 win over William Jessup on Thursday evening at Warrior Field.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime after William Jessup (4-7-3, 1-4-1 GSAC) took the lead in the 10th minute, OUAZ (10-4-1, 5-2) came out after the break with a different energy. That manifested early as Titouan Desveaux slid a shot by the Jessup keeper to even the game less than two minutes into the second half.

Just over two minutes later, Desveaux beat two defenders on the wing and drew a foul in the box to set up a penalty kick from Tinashe Simbo. The ensuing kick snuck between the post and a diving keeper to give OUAZ the lead.

William Jessup continued to apply pressure and pulled the game even at 2-2 when Luis Cruz scored in the 73rd minute. The Spirit found the critical next goal when Noah Benvenuti found a loose ball in the box on a failed clearance and fired it into the top of the goal to give OUAZ the lead in the 80th minute.

The game's final chance came in the 88th minute after Benvenuti was whistled for a foul in the box to give the Warriors a penalty with a chance to tie. That opportunity was denied by OUAZ keeper Adam Salama as he turned aside the attempt from Luis Castillo while diving to his left.

The PK save was a season-high 10th of the game for Salama and secured his eighth win of the season. It's just the third 10-plus save game in program history.

Each team took 18 shots, with the Spirit putting seven on goal. Simbo led the team with five shots and three on goal. Bido Elmasry picked up an assist in the Desveaux goal.

Back atop the GSAC table with two games to play – although they do not control their own destiny to win the regular season title – the Spirit will look for a second road win on this trip on Saturday when they visit Menlo at 1:30 p.m.
