Balanced Effort Leads Spirit to Home Win

SURPRISE, Ariz. – With five players scoring in double figures, the OUAZ men's basketball team picked up a needed Golden State Athletic Conference victory by defeating Life Pacific 81-72 on Saturday afternoon at Faith Arena.

Despite leading for most of the first half, OUAZ (12-5, 3-4 GSAC) trailed Life Pacific (4-10, 1-6) by four at intermission. The Spirit would score the first 11 points of the second half to ignite an 18-4 run that opened a 55-45 lead with 11:31 remaining. LPU would not get closer than six the rest of the way as the Spirit closed out a third straight win over the Warriors.

Josiah De'laCerda led the scoring attack for the Spirit with 18 points on 8 of 17 shooting. Kam Malbrough added 17 points off the bench by hitting six of his 10 shots with a pair of 3-pointers.

OUAZ shot 46.0 percent as a team with a 40-28 edge in points in the paint. The Spirit scored 26 points from 17 LPU turnovers with 19 fast break points. They had nine makes from beyond the arc while posting 20 assists on 29 made baskets.

Marcus Williams recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 assists. It's just the fifth double-digit assist game in program history. Kolten Hitt finished with 12 points while Devin Collins scored 10.

The Spirit held the Warriors to 41.9 percent from the field and 7 of 25 from three. Each team had 37 rebounds, and the Warriors got 32 points off the bench.

Kyler Villarreal led LPU with 19 points.

OUAZ closes out the first half of conference play next weekend in northern California. They begin the trip at William Jessup on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
