Softball Game Notes -- Week 1

STORYLINES
A new era of OUAZ softball begins on Friday when the Spirit host No. 2 College of Idaho in a doubleheader at Willow Canyon High School starting at noon. In May, the Yotes ended the Spirit season at the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.

OUAZ will take to its home field under the direction of first-year head coach Ernesto Ortiz. In July, Ortiz was named head coach of the program and will be making his collegiate head coaching debut on Friday.

Ortiz leads a team that is the defending Golden State Athletic Conference champions after winning the conference tournament last season. This year's team returns 23 players from that championship squad, including eight of the nine regulars in the lineup and all three pitchers. The returners accounted for 81 percent of the team's hits and 90 percent of its runs scored last season.

SPIRIT LEADERS
Andraya Rhinehart and Briana Tucker return after being named to the GSAC All-Conference team last season. Rhinehart enters the season having started 52 consecutive games and as the program leader with her .844 career OPS. She led the team last season with seven multi-hit and five multi-RBI games.

Tucker started 28 games a season ago – 25 behind the plate – and she hit .256 and tallied a team-best 10 RBI. She went 3 for 7 at the NAIA Opening Round to end her season on a five-game hitting streak.

Alexandra McCutcheon returns to the OUAZ circle after being named to the GSAC All-Conference team. She ended 2021 with a 2.86 ERA and a 7-6 record. McCutcheon had a run of 10 appearances from March 6-May 4 where she allowed just six runs (three earned) over 36.1 innings pitched.
