Spirit Upset No. 17 Royals at Faith Arena

SURPRISE, Ariz. – All five starters scored in double figures as the OUAZ men's basketball team upset No. 17 Hope International 78-63 on Thursday night at Faith Arena to snap a two-game losing streak.

Josiah De'laCerda was stellar for OUAZ (14-8, 5-7 GSAC) with 22 points and 18 rebounds to lead the team in each category. He hit 8 of 14 shots with a pair of threes while tying for the second-most rebounds in a game in program history.

Following the lead for De'laCerda, the Spirit shot 49.0 percent from the floor and hit 7 of 17 from beyond the arc. They forced Hope International (16-5, 9-3) into 16 turnovers and turned those into 26 points.

After the Royals scored the game's first basket, OUAZ followed with eight straight points and never trailed again. They took control of the game with a 27-9 run that ended with the Spirit leading 46-27 with 18:06 to play in the second half. Hope never got closer than nine the rest of the night.

Devin Collins added 15 points, with Kam Malbrough scoring 13 points. Keshawn Bruner provided 12 points and seven rebounds, while Kolten Hitt had 10 points and four assists.

Hope International shot 43.1 percent with 52 points in the paint, but the Royals were just 2 of 16 from distance. The Spirit held a 41-32 edge in rebounds.

Jalani Horn led the Royals with 16 points off the bench.

OUAZ will look for consecutive wins for the first time in 2022 on Saturday when they host San Diego Christian in Faith Arena at 2 p.m.
