Westmont Rallies to Earn Season Split with Spirit

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The roller coaster of a month for the OUAZ men's basketball team continued on Thursday night as Westmont rallied from a 13-point first-half deficit to earn an 83-71 win over the Spirit.

OUAZ (13-7, 4-6 GSAC) has now alternated wins and losses in every game in January since having its four-game winning streak snapped earlier in the month.

The Spirit had built a 28-15 lead midway through the first half before Westmont (12-7, 3-7) closed the period on a 23-10 run to enter the break level at 38-38. OUAZ then built a 49-44 lead early in the second half when a 14-5 Warriors spurt gave them a lead they never relinquished.

Outside shooting was a thorn in the side of the Spirit all night as they made just 4 of 22 from beyond the arc and missed their final 14 attempts. They used 42 points in the paint and 13 offensive rebounds for 14 points to keep within striking distance before the shooting struggles caught up with them.

Westmont converted the 14 OUAZ turnovers into 16 points, and the Warriors held a 39-2 edge in bench points.

Josiah De'laCerda and Jayce Catchings scored 19 points apiece to lead the Spirit. De'laCerda made 9 of 13 shots with a team-best eight rebounds. Kolten Hitt made three from beyond the arc to propel him to 15 points.

Westmont got a game-high 23 points from Nate Meithof.

The Spirit will look to turn the trend back in their favor on Saturday when they face The Master's at 3 p.m. (AZ) in Santa Clarita, California.
