Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Spirit Hang Tough in Loss to Defending Champs

The OUAZ men's soccer team got its biggest test on Saturday when they travelled to Olathe, Kan. to face defending NAIA National Champions Missouri Valley in a neutral site game Saturday afternoon. While the Spirit did not leave with a victory, they left the matchup with good takeaways, and now know what is needed to beat the very top of the nation.

The Vikings struck right away, as Juri Schlingmann scored in the 8', putting the Spirit in an early hole. OUAZ did have a few chances in the first half, finishing with four before the break.

Missouri Valley doubled its lead in the 51' thanks to Timo Dekker, but OUAZ did not go away quietly. Tom Cohen finally struck in the 70', giving the Spirit new life late in the game.

The Vikings found the back of the net not too long after, as Schlingmann scored his second of the game to give his team the solid advantage. The Spirit were unable to find the back of the net again in the final nine minutes, dropping its first game of the year.

Both teams finished with identical shot totals, taking eight shots and having four hit the target. OUAZ goalkeeper Angel Ramirez's shutout streak of 270:52 came to an end during the afternoon.

The Spirit will have a chance to jump back into the win column, this time against 17th-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene on Monday. Kickoff for the second game in Olathe is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
