Ramirez Extends Shutout Streak as Spirit Win Again

SURPRISE, ARIZ. – The OUAZ men's soccer team wrapped up its three-game homestand with a 2-0 win over Benedictine-Mesa on Saturday evening, pushing its perfect start to three wins this fall. It is the third time in the last four season the Spirit have started 3-0, and have not lost to an in-state opponent since November 2017.

OUAZ played a similar game to Thursday night's effort, except they were able to find an early goal. Victor de la O scored after a scramble in the RedHawks' box had the ball drop to his foot, and Aleem Barclay was credited with an assist after his initial shot rebounded to his open teammate.

The Spirit continued to press in the first half, eventually hitting halftime with 11 shots to BenU's one. OUAZ was also able to force eight corner kicks in the first 45 minutes, coming dangerously close multiple times to scoring again off of them before halftime.

While the Spirit continued to control the play, the lead did not double until the 55'. Nathan Head took the ball all the way down the right sideline, then crossed it in to Christoph Seegar, who buried it from about eight yards out. It was Seegar's second tally of the year, and Head earned his first career assist and point.

Angel Ramirez faced his former team for the first time, and made three saves for his third consecutive concussion. Ramirez now has a shutout streak that is currently at 270:52, and a regular-season shutout streak at 448:55.

OUAZ finished the game with 23 total shots, having 14 hit the target. The RedHawks Tyler Garner made 12 saves in his team's first match of the Fall.

The Spirit will put its 3-0 record up to the test next week, when they head to Kansas for a pair of top-20 matchups. OUAZ will see defending NAIA National Champions and top-ranked Missouri Valley next Saturday, then will face #17 MidAmerica Nazarene on September 6.
