Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Pair of Goals Push Spirit Past Mustangs

SURPRISE, ARIZ. - After a convincing offensive showing, the OUAZ men's soccer team posted yet another display of goal scoring Thursday night. The Spirit had multiple chances all night, and finally converted a pair in the second half to down University of the Southwest (N.M.) at Spirit Field.

The Spirit played excellently all night, taking control of the possession right away. The team was able to fire off four shots in the second half, but did not connect all the way on a few passes to get the golden opportunities. OUAZ continued to play its style, and it eventually led to Tom Cohen getting dragged down in the box in 54'.

Joaquin Bermejilo converted the resulting penalty to give OUAZ the 1-0 lead and a little more confidence heading down the stretch. Cohen once again drove the attack for the Spirit in the 70', laying a beautiful feed into the path of Kebba Jobe, who fired one into the net for a 2-0 lead.

It was in lockdown mode after that, as the Spirit closed out the final 20 minutes for its second consecutive victory to start the season. The Mustangs were able to muster only two shots, with none of them hitting the target.

Angel Ramirez did not record a save, but he did record his fourth clean sheet in the last seven regular season starts. Ramirez currently holds a shutout streak of 180:52, and has allowed just two goals in his last four starts overall, a stretch that has featured three shutouts.

OUAZ head coach Matt Gow expected the game to be physical, and his team took that message right onto the playing surface. The Spirit had hard, successful challenges all night long, and finished the night with 13 total fouls, all while defending the ensuing free kicks well.

The Spirit will have a quick turnaround, as they shoot for yet another 3-0 start to the season on Saturday night. OUAZ will welcome in Benedictine-Mesa on Saturday night, with kickoff from Spirit Field scheduled for 7 p.m.
