Game Recap: Softball |

Historic Season Ends at NAIA Opening Round

The OUAZ softball team had to wait an extra day to make its debut in the NAIA Softball National Championship Tournament, as heavy rains plagued the Fayette, Mo. area. The cancellations and delays forced the Spirit to play twice in an eight-hour span, and OUAZ lost both games as they were eliminated in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Game 1: (4)Central Methodist 3, OUAZ 0

One bad inning put the Spirit down early, and the team could not find its way back. The Fayette Bracket's top seed, and fourth-ranked, Central Methodist scored three runs in the second inning, riding that to an Opening Round victory.

The Spirit had four hits, coming from two players in the lineup. Catcher Briana Tucker and third baseman Rachel Stockseth had matching 2-3 performances at the plate, all of those knocks being singles.

OUAZ did get a couple of opportunities with runners in scoring position, but were not able to capitalize. The Spirit had a runner at second base in the first, fifth and seventh, but all were stranded to end the inning.

Cori Turner started the game for the Spirit, and Alexandra McCutcheon came in for the final four innings. She stabilized the contest in the circle for OUAZ, giving up just three hits and two walks to keep the game within three.

(15)College of Idaho 8, OUAZ 4

Just under three hours later, the Spirit had its first elimination game, with first pitch coming 24 minutes into Wednesday. OUAZ was down early right away, as the Yotes scored a run in the top of the first.

The Spirit answered in the bottom half, as Andraya Rhinehart came around to tie the game. C of I scored five runs over the next two innings to take a 6-1 lead, but OUAZ began to chip away in the middle innings.

OUAZ pulled cut the lead to two with a pair of runs in the fifth inning, but that was as close as the Spirit would get. The Yotes would score single runs in the sixth and seventh, and held on to keep its season alive.

The Spirit got six hits in the second game of the Fayette Bracket, getting a two-hit performance from Mashayla Beltran. Tucker, Avery Bohn and Kelly Stumper each drove in a run.

A historic season came to an end with the loss, as the Spirit accomplished a lot in the team's fourth season. OUAZ won its first regular-season and tournament conference championship, along with its inaugural appearance in the NAIA Softball National Championship tournament.
