Spirit Secure Second Consecutive Trip to GSAC Tournament Final

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – For the second consecutive GSAC tournament, the OUAZ men's tennis team has made its way into the finals. The Spirit won its semifinal dual 4-0 over Saint Katherine at the Barnes Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon.

OUAZ grabbed the momentum right away, taking the doubles point in quick fashion. Michael Shin and Dong-Hyun Kim took their match 6-1, and not long after Grzegorz Rudnicki/Andres Reyes took their match 6-2.

Reyes continued to roll into his singles match, beating Diego Navarro in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Rudnicki also won in straight sets to put the Spirit in a clinch position, defeating Sebastian Gomez 6-1, 6-3.

Shin clinched the dual in straight sets for the Spirit, but it did not come easy out of the gate. He trailed 4-1 in the first set, but rattled off five consecutive points to take a 1-0 lead, then wrapped up the dual with a 6-3 second set victory over Federico Franco.

"When I came out, I kind of came to play defense most of the match," Shin said. "I realized that my game is all offense, and by playing offense, I had [Franco] on his toes."

The Spirit will take on 13th-ranked San Diego Christian in the GSAC Tournament Final on Thursday afternoon, the second time in as many trips OUAZ will be playing for the championship. The Hawks are the only team to defeat the Spirit this season, as OUAZ will carry a 7-1 record into Thursday.
