Spirit Battle Tough in GSAC Final

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – The pursuit of the conference championship for OUAZ men's tennis ended on Thursday afternoon as the Spirit lost 4-0 to (13) San Diego Christian. The Spirit had made it to the finals in the second straight conference tournament.

The Hawks came out to take the doubles point, winning 6-3 in the #2 doubles match and 6-2 in the #3 doubles match. Ones pair Austin Todd and Michael Loyd were tied at 5-5 before SDCC clinched the duals first point.

OUAZ kept the singles matches close, as they were on pace to win three of those before the dual was called due to a clinch. Loyd was able to grab the Spirit's lone official point with a 6-2, 6-1 win over David Samardzija.

Andres Reyes had claimed victory in the first set of his match against GSAC Player of the Year Chris Papa, and was leading 6-5 in the second before the dual was called. Dong-Hyun Kim was deadlocked at four with Robin Van Den Hoek after winning the first set in the fours match.

Austin Todd battled hard in the twos match, battling back from a 6-0 first-set loss to send the second set into a tiebreaker. Todd trailed 5-2 in set two before winning four consecutive games to keep the Spirit alive until the end.

Todd was a big part of a senior class that has seen postseason success at all levels. In the program's first four years (three completed seasons), OUAZ has made the GSAC Tournament Final every year of eligibility, and made the NCCAA National Championship Final during the 2018-2019 season.

"I'm going to miss those guys so much, all of them," OUAZ head coach Brad Louderback said of his seniors. "Our program is their program. They've built this program, this is a special group, a very special group to me. We started our program with this group, they built the foundation to keep the program moving forward."
