Ochoa Takes Down Firestorm in OT Again

SURPRISE, ARIZ. - After Monday's game, OUAZ men's soccer midfielder Mauricio Ochoa has now scored three goals on the season. He has netted two OT winners against rival Arizona Christian, as he scored the golden goal at home to sweep the season series with the Firestorm.

Ochoa netted the game winner nearly halfway through the second overtime after a great feed from Victory De La O. The Spirit took all seven shots in the two extra frames.

Monday's contest followed nearly the exact same script as the last matchup in Glendale. ACU went up early, as German Lopez recorded his sixth of the season in the 17'.

The Spirit did not wait until the eleventh hour to score the equalizer, as Tyson LaPord scored his first career goal in the 56' to pull the game even. After the shots were 6-6 after the first half, the Spirit fired 12 shot attempts in the second half, and had the shot advantage 19-2 from the second half onward.

The yellow card became a star as the game went on, as five total cautions were issued out. Everyone who received one played well from there on out, as no red card were necessary in the intense rivalry.

Plenty of shots means a higher chance of a corner kick, and the Spirit took 11 on the afternoon. After getting six in the first half, the Spirit had five more the remainder of the game, but only one after regulation.

The win puts the Spirit in a simple postseason situation – win and you're in. The Spirit must defeat William Jessup on Thursday to secure the GSAC East crown and its spot in the conference championship game. Kickoff from Spirit Field on Thursday is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
