Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Spirit Pull Ahead Victorious in Tight Battle Versus ACU

SURPRISE, Ariz. - After defeating Arizona Christian 4-1 back on February 13, the OUAZ men's tennis team was entrenched in a battle with the Firestorm on Wednesday. Every point mattered in this dual-of-the-year candidate, and the Spirit were able to claim a 4-3 victory in Surprise.

OUAZ dropped all three doubles matches, putting them quickly down 1-0. Andres Reyes looked like he was cruising to a win in the first singles match after winning 6-0 in set one, but Anthony Popyrin answered right back with a 6-1 second set to tie the match. Reyes was able to pull out the third set, not allowing the Firestorm to grab a 2-0 dual lead.

Austin Todd was able to control his match, as he took down Jose Dominguez 6-2, 6-4 to give OUAZ a 2-1 dual lead. That quickly evaporated as Grzegorz Rudnicki fell in straight sets to Andres Vasquez (7-5, 6-2).

Michael Loyd picked up an important victory, as after winning the first set 6-0, needed a 6-4 victory in the third set to give OUAZ a 3-2 lead, and an opportunity to clinch the dual. ACU was able to tie it at three points each when David Maas defeated Alan Vasquez in three sets.

The dual came down to Dong Hyun Kim, who dropped his first set to Jonas Wand, 7-5. Kim rebounded in the final two sets, winning each comfortably, 6-3, 6-2. The win guarantees a regular-season second place finish in the GSAC for the first time ever.

OUAZ will have to wait nearly a month before they hit the court again. They will travel to San Diego, Calif. for the GSAC Tournament, a three-day event that is scheduled to start on April 21.
