Balanced Attack Puts Spirit into Semifinals

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Playing in the postseason for the first time in program history, the OUAZ men's basketball team looked like an experienced group as they earned a 79-67 win over Southwestern Christian in the quarterfinals of the NCCAA National Championship.

OUAZ (12-5) had five players score in double figures and shot 51.9 percent from the field in the win. They overcame a 7 of 22 shooting effort from beyond the arc by scoring 10 second chance points and making 18 of 21 at the foul line.

The Spirit used a 13-0 run in the first half to build a 38-26 lead with 1:57 to play before halftime. Southwestern Christian (6-10) responded with the final nine points of the half to trim the Spirit lead to 38-35 at intermission.

Neither team would score for the first 4:22 of the second half and it was eventually a two-point OUAZ lead with 13:01 remaining. Both teams made runs over the next few minutes and with 3:29 to play the Spirit lead was 65-64.

Kam Malbrough scored consecutive baskets for the Spirit to spark a 13-2 run that sealed the win. Over that final 3:29, the Spirit made 10 of 12 at the foul line.

After scoring just three points in the first half, Malbrough responded to lead the team with 19 points while grabbing a team-best nine rebounds and three steals. Josiah De'laCerda added 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting with seven rebounds.

OUAZ also got 12 points from Quentin Guliford, 11 from Kolten Hitt, and 10 from Devin Collins. Marcus Williams led the Spirit with five assists.

While committing 16 turnovers, the Spirit gave up only eight points from those turnovers and they held the Eagles to 39.1 percent shooting.
