Spirit Roll into Championship Game Behind De’laCerda & Malbrough

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Make it two wins in as many postseason games for the OUAZ men's basketball program after the Spirit cruised to an 86-66 win over Alice Lloyd on Thursday evening in the semifinals of the NCCAA DI Men's Basketball National Championship.

OUAZ (13-5) will play for the title on Saturday at 2 p.m. against the winner of Grace and Northwestern (Minn.).

It took a while for the Spirit to find a rhythm on Thursday, but once that happened, they rode it to a win. Tied at 25-25 with 7:03 to play before halftime, OUAZ closed the half with a 23-7 run that included the Spirit scoring the final 13 points of the period.

Kam Malbrough and Josiah De'laCerda combined to score 20 of the team's 23 points during the decisive run. OUAZ made eight of its 11 shots while holding Alice Lloyd (18-7) to just 3 of 9.

After shooting 55.9 percent overall and 8 of 16 from three in the first half, the Spirit ended the game at 49.2 percent from the field with 10 makes from beyond the arc. Each team had 35 rebounds as the Spirit were able to limit one of the top rebounding teams in the country.

De'laCerda finished with a season-high 27 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. He hit 12 of 18 shots and added two blocks. Malbrough scored 22 points with six assists and five rebounds. This was the first time this season that OUAZ had a pair of 20-point scorers in the same game.

Alice Lloyd was able to force the Spirit into 17 turnovers which they turned into 22 points. OUAZ held the Eagles to 38.6 percent shooting and just 8 of 28 from beyond the arc. The Spirit also had 16 assists and they forced 16 turnovers.

Damon Tobler and Jared Strickland scored 12 points apiece to lead the Eagles.
