Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Offensive Explosion Falls Short in OT

The Spirit found themselves deep in the heart of Texas on Monday night, and were also deep in a battle with Mary Hardin-Baylor. A back-and-forth game that saw eight combined goals in regulation ended in heartbreak for OUAZ late into the second overtime period.

UMHB's Brody Conley scored with 1:48 remaining in double overtime, and the Crusaders took home a 5-4 win on Monday night. This marks the first time since 2017 in which OUAZ did not win its first road game of the season.

Samuel George returned to 2019 form, netting two goals on the night. George scored in the 38' and 63', with Victor De La O and Tom Cohen adding a goal of their own.

OUAZ fell behind 2-0 in the 22' after giving up two goals in a 2:42 span, but De La O pulled his team within one. George tied the game with his first goal, and Tom Cohen gave the Spirit the lead with his first career collegiate goal.

Raymond Kennedy tied the game 4:05 later, but George potted his second goal to quickly give OUAZ the lead back. The Crusaders battled and eventually found an equalizer off the foot of Patrick Roach in the 74'.

After nearly 35 minutes, and almost two overtime periods later, the Cru were able to put the game away thanks to Conley's goal in the final two minutes. It is the latest goal the Spirit have ever given up in a regular season game.

The Spirit had a handful of opportunities in overtime, but ultimately were unable to get a shot off. They finished the game with nine total shots, while UMHB finished with 24 (12 on target). Seba Ferreira made seven saves in his second start in an OUAZ uniform.

Mauricio Ochoa was sharing the ball well, assisting on two of the four goals. Glademir Mendoza also picked up an assist for the second straight game to start the season.

The Spirit will have another chance in Texas on Wednesday when they take on Hardin-Simmons University. Kickoff from Abilene is scheduled for 1 p.m. Arizona time.
