Spirit Win Regular Season Finale at Jessup to Keep Postseason Hopes Alive

ROCKLIN, Calif. – In a game that would have been easy to pack it in and come home empty handed, the OUAZ men's basketball team went the other way and earned a 73-70 win over William Jessup on Saturday afternoon to split the weekend's two-game series.

With the result, OUAZ ends its regular season with an 11-5 overall record and they finished third outright in the GSAC East Division with a 6-4 mark in conference play.

One day after getting outplayed inside, the Spirit adjusted and got 34 points in the paint and won the rebounding game 39-35. They turned 12 offensive rebounds into 14 second chance points and allowed just 10 offensive rebounds to William Jessup (10-5, 7-3 GSAC) after giving up 13 on Friday.

The Spirit shot 44.1 percent from the field with eight makes from beyond the arc. They totaled 15 assists with 14 turnovers and scored 17 points from the 13 Warrior turnovers.

Josiah De'laCerda picked up his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 15 rebounds. He made 6 of 12 shots and added four assists, two steals, and one blocked shot.

Trailing by three with 15:27 remaining in the second half, OUAZ scored 13 straight points to open a 52-42 lead they never relinquished. They closed out the win by hitting 6 of 8 at the foul line in the final minute.

Kam Malbrough finished with 19 points to lead the Spirit. He also grabbed six rebounds with four assists and three steals. Marcus Williams added 15 points and Kolten Hitt scored 13.

The Warriors got a game-high 21 points from Myles Corey.

OUAZ now sits on the bubble for the 48-team NAIA National Championship and they await the announcement of the field on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Spirit also is in consideration for the NCCAA National Championship should they not make the NAIA field.
