Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Season Starts With Pair of Wins

SURPRISE, ARIZ. - The shortened 2020 season was not what OUAZ men's tennis was expecting, but a long offseason payed dividends on Friday. The Spirit won its first two duals of the 2021 season over a pair of NCAA Division II schools.

OUAZ 4, Western New Mexico 2
The day got off on the wrong track, as OUAZ dropped the doubles point despite valiant efforts. Michael Shin and Dong Hyun Kim lost 6-3, but Grzegorz Rudnicki and Andres Reyes kept the Spirit in it with a 6-1 win. Michael Loyd and Austin Todd tied their doubles contest 6-6, but lost the tiebreaker 5-0 to drop the doubles point to the Mustangs.

The Spirit carried momentum over to the singles competition, where they took control of the dual. Loyd and Noah Griffith grabbed two points for OUAZ with a pair of 6-0, 6-3 wins. Erik Dallman tied it up for WNMU with his 6-4, 6-3 win over Kim, but the Spirit took two more matches to wrap up a win.

Todd scored a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Joaquin Delpino, and Rudnicki secured the dual for OUAZ with a 6-0, 6-4 performance. This marks the third straight dual win for the Spirit, a streak that started March 6, 2020.

OUAZ 4, Colorado-Mesa 1
Doubles was more favorable in the day's second dual, as the Spirit took the point without the third match having to finish. Todd/Loyd and Reyes/Rudnicki put together matching 6-3 victories, stopping the Vasquez/Kim match at 3-4.

Thiago Nejm quickly tied the dual for the Mavericks, but OUAZ rattled off three straight wins to clinch the dual. Rudnicki started with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 win, then Reyes pushed the Spirit lead to 3-1 with a three-set win of his own.

Austin Todd secured OUAZ triumph with a 6-4, 6-4 win to keep his team perfect on the season. The current four-dual win streak is the longest in program history.

The Spirit hope to keep its winning ways when OUAZ visits rival Arizona Christian on Saturday. The dual in Glendale is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. Arizona time.
