Grace Holds Off Spirit in NCCAA Championship Game

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Two first-half goals by Grace would be enough to end any hopes the OUAZ women's soccer team had of winning the NCCAA National Championship as the Spirit fell to the Lancers 2-1 in Saturday's title game.

Grace (15-7-1) scored the game's first goal in the sixth minute when Alexis Larimore intercepted an OUAZ (14-5-3) clearing attempt and carried the ball for a shot that hit the side netting inside the left post.

The Lancers would double their advantage in the 38th minute, with JJ Aalbue creating her own scoring opportunity. OUAZ pulled one back in the 68th minute as Emily Lynch headed home a free ball in the box that had bounced off the crossbar on a free kick from Kendall Caron.

The Spirit had a few chances for an equalizer down the stretch, including a shot towards the far post that the Grace keeper, Bethany Blackwood, got her fingers on to push it wide of the target in the 76th minute.

That was the last of the four shots on goal by the Spirit, and they finished the evening with a 14-8 edge in total shots. Each team took six corner kicks.

Chandler Schioppi had a team-high three shots, with Jones, Caron, and Haley Chitwood getting two shots apiece. The goal by Lynch was her sixth of the tournament and earned her the Select Golden Ball Award.

Chloe Gutierrez made one save in defeat.

After the game, both Lynch and Schioppi were named to the All-Tournament Team.
