Second Half Struggles Spoils OUAZ Upset Bid

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Looking to upset a nationally-ranked opponent for the second straight game, the OUAZ men's basketball team gave up a halftime lead and lost to No. 12 The Master's 79-76 in overtime on Thursday night at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (6-3, 1-2 GSAC) opened the game with a 16-4 run and led for over 40 minutes of action. The lead was its largest at 43-30 with 18:26 remaining in the second half before The Master's (6-1, 1-1 GSAC) began to chip away.

The Mustangs used a 10-2 run to take a 3-point cushion with 46 seconds to play, but a Josiah De'laCerda three with 37.8 on the clock would get the Spirit to overtime. OUAZ then scored 11 of the first 16 points of the extra period when the visitors rallied with the final nine points of the night to spoil the OUAZ upset attempt.

After shooting 51.7 percent in the first half, OUAZ would make 32.3 percent in the second half, and the Spirit finished the game at 41.8 percent. They were 8 of 26 from beyond the arc, with the De'laCerda tying make the only made three of the second half.

TMU shot 55.9 percent in the game, including 61.8 percent after halftime. The Mustangs held a 44-38 advantage in paint points. OUAZ forced the Mustangs into 25 turnovers which resulted in 27 Spirit points.

De'laCerda finished with 23 points and seven rebounds. He made 10 of 14 shots, and all three of his attempts from three. Keshawn Bruner added 17 points and six rebounds. Kolten Hitt recorded a double-double with 10 points and a program-record 10 steals. The 10 steals are the most by a GSAC player during the time records are available dating back to the 2005-06 season.

Caden Starr scored 23 points off the bench to lead the Mustangs.

OUAZ now gets set to host Westmont on Saturday at 2 p.m.
